Chapter Twelve

Abigail held her breath as she walked into yet another ball with a pretend smile forcing her lips to comply. Lord and Lady Nightinger were close friends of her parents, so declining the invitation was out of the question. The only saving grace was that Georgiana and Edmund were also attending, though she had not spotted them yet.

Elinor Price stood alone near the entrance to the card room and Abigail made her way over to her.

“Good evening, Miss Price.”

She turned toward Abigail and smiled. “Lady Abigail, how delightful to see you.”

“Has my late arrival caused me to miss anything interesting?”

“I’m afraid not. No matter how hard I try, I cannot convince Mama that it is not necessary for us to be the first to arrive at every social function. I believe Lord Hinsdale is in the card room.”

Abigail frowned. She was happy to delay their customary awkward dance until later on. A footman approached and she snagged two glasses of champagne from the tray and handed one to Elinor. “This is so we can start the night on a good note. No more boring conversations and staid dances for us. From now on we will strive to enjoy ourselves.”

They clinked their glasses together and Abigail tilted her head back and downed her entire glass. Elinor stared at her with eyes as wide as a startled doe.

Lord Oakley pulled a glass from the tray and paused beside them. He bumped his glass against Abigail’s now empty flute. “Ladies, I hope you will both save a dance for me this evening.”

“Of course, my lord,” they said in unison. He sauntered off as quickly as he had appeared.

Abigail grabbed another glass from the tray of a passing footman, but this one was only lemonade. Though she intended to enjoy herself, she had to mind her behavior. “What do you think of Lady Gressler’s gown?”

“Urhm…the copper-ish color is unique.”

“Yes, I suppose it is if you are a fan of tarnished silver.”

Elinor choked on a sip of champagne and Abigail patted her back.

“What on earth has gotten into you tonight?”

“I’m tired of standing around quietly, waiting on someone else to determine when I can begin to carry on with the rest of my life. I am taking matters into my own hands. I will no longer mope about, but instead will make the decision to enjoy myself.”

“I believe that is an excellent plan.”

“I’m glad you agree with me.” Abigail turned toward the dance floor. “So what do you think of the fit of Lady Gressler’s gown?”

Elinor glanced around as if checking to make sure no one else could hear their conversation. “I suppose if I were her, I should like for the bodice to be a bit tighter. And instead of staying with copper tones for everything, I might consider adding a gold sash or some other color to break up the monochromatic scheme.”

“I’m pleased to discover that we think alike.”

“That is a disturbing discovery, to be sure.”

Abigail stiffened at the sound of Edmund’s voice, not daring to turn and meet his eyes.
